If you need ACA health insurance in Livonia, MI, Samantha Lewis Agency can walk you through the Marketplace from first quote to enrollment. This page is for individuals, families and self-employed people who buy their own coverage and want to understand metal tiers, subsidies and deadlines before they choose.
How does the ACA Marketplace work in Michigan?
Michigan uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. You apply once, HealthCare.gov determines whether you qualify for premium tax credits or cost-sharing reductions, and then you choose a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum plan from the insurers offered in your area. Samantha Lewis Agency in Livonia can help you compare those plans and complete the enrollment, usually at no extra cost to you.
ACA plans come with protections that matter: they cannot deny you or charge you more for a pre-existing condition, and every plan covers the 10 Essential Health Benefits. You can enroll during Open Enrollment each fall, or during a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event.
Plans that look alike on price can have very different networks, drug lists and out-of-pocket costs; we line them up so you can see the trade-offs.
What are the Marketplace metal tiers?
Marketplace plans are grouped into four metal tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum — based on how you and the plan share costs, not on the quality of care. Bronze usually has the lowest premium and the highest costs when you get care; Platinum is the reverse. Silver is the only tier where eligible lower-income households can receive cost-sharing reductions, which can lower deductibles and copays.
| Metal tier | Monthly premium | Costs when you get care | Often a fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Lower | Higher | People who rarely use care and want protection from big bills |
| Silver | Moderate | Moderate (lower with cost-sharing reductions) | Households eligible for cost-sharing reductions |
| Gold | Higher | Lower | People who see doctors often or take regular prescriptions |
| Platinum | Highest | Lowest | People who expect heavy use of care and want predictable costs |
Do I qualify for an ACA subsidy?
You may qualify for an ACA subsidy, called a premium tax credit, based on your household income and household size. The enhanced credits expired at the end of 2025, so the 400% of federal poverty level limit is back: households above it do not qualify for premium tax credits. HealthCare.gov makes the final determination, and we can help Livonia-area households estimate where they stand.
This change, often called the return of the subsidy cliff, means some households that received help in recent years may not qualify for 2027, and others may see a smaller credit. KFF tracks the policy background if you want to read more.
- Estimate your household income for the coverage year carefully, counting everyone in your tax household.
- Report income or household changes to the Marketplace during the year.
We can’t give tax advice, but we can walk through the application with you.
What are cost-sharing reductions on Silver plans?
Cost-sharing reductions are extra savings that lower your deductible, copays and out-of-pocket costs. They are available only on Silver Marketplace plans and only for households with lower incomes, as determined by HealthCare.gov. If you qualify, a Silver plan may give you much of the protection of a higher tier without its premium, which is why we always check before recommending a Bronze plan.
Cost-sharing reductions are separate from premium tax credits: the credit lowers your monthly premium, while cost-sharing reductions lower what you pay when you use care. Some households qualify for both.
Can I enroll in a Marketplace plan outside Open Enrollment?
Yes, if you have a qualifying life event that opens a Special Enrollment Period. Common events include losing other health coverage, moving, getting married, and having or adopting a child. You typically have 60 days from the event to pick a plan. Without a qualifying event, Michigan residents wait for the next Open Enrollment, which runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027.
See the full schedule on HealthCare.gov or in our Michigan open enrollment guide. If you are leaving a job, our individual and family health insurance page covers COBRA alternatives.
How is an ACA plan different from short-term health insurance?
ACA Marketplace plans must cover pre-existing conditions and the 10 Essential Health Benefits, and they can qualify for premium tax credits. Short-term health insurance in Michigan is limited to 185 days in any 365-day period with the same insurer, isn’t required to cover pre-existing conditions, doesn’t include Essential Health Benefits, and the insurer doesn’t have to renew it. It can bridge a short gap but is not a substitute for a Marketplace plan.
| ACA Marketplace plan | Short-term plan in Michigan | |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-existing conditions | Covered; no higher price | Not required to be covered |
| Essential Health Benefits | All 10 covered | Not included |
| Length | Plan year, renewable | Up to 185 days in any 365-day period with the same insurer |
| Renewal | Can renew each year | Cannot be renewed or extended past 185 days |
| Premium tax credits | Available if eligible | Not available |
Short-term rules come from the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services; see the DIFS short-term coverage FAQ or call DIFS at 877-999-6442.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Marketplace plan turn me down for a pre-existing condition?
No. ACA Marketplace plans cannot deny you coverage or charge you more because of a pre-existing condition. That protection is one of the biggest differences between a Marketplace plan and short-term health insurance, which in Michigan is not required to cover pre-existing conditions.
Does using an agent change my Marketplace premium?
No. Agents and brokers are paid by insurers, so enrolling through Samantha Lewis Agency does not change the premium for your Marketplace plan and usually costs you nothing extra. You get the same plans and the same subsidy rules as enrolling yourself on HealthCare.gov, plus help comparing them.
What happens if my income changes during the year?
Report it to the Marketplace as soon as you can. Premium tax credits are based on your estimated income and household size, so a raise, a job loss or a new household member can change the credit you qualify for. Updating early helps avoid a surprise when you reconcile the credit at tax time.
Are dental and vision included in Marketplace plans?
It depends on the plan. Adult dental and vision coverage is often bought separately, while some plans include extras. We help Livonia-area clients look at medical, dental and vision together so you can decide whether a bundled option or separate policies fits your family and budget better.
Do Marketplace plans cover the same benefits everywhere?
Every ACA Marketplace plan covers the 10 Essential Health Benefits, but networks, drug lists, deductibles and copays differ from plan to plan and insurer to insurer. That’s why two Silver plans with similar premiums can feel very different once you use them, and why we compare them line by line.
