Health insurance open enrollment in Michigan for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 on HealthCare.gov. This guide is for individuals, families and self-employed people in Livonia and across Michigan who buy their own coverage and want to know the key dates and what to check before renewing.
When is health insurance open enrollment in Michigan for 2027?
Open Enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage in Michigan runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027 on HealthCare.gov. If you enroll by December 15, 2026, coverage starts January 1, 2027. If you enroll between December 16 and January 15, coverage starts February 1, 2027. After January 15, you need a qualifying life event to enroll or change plans.
- Nov 1, 2026 — Open Enrollment begins for 2027 Marketplace plans.
- Dec 15, 2026 — Last day to enroll for coverage starting January 1, 2027.
- Jan 15, 2027 — Open Enrollment ends; plans chosen Dec 16 – Jan 15 start February 1, 2027.
You may have read that open enrollment was being cut short. A 2025 federal rule would have ended Open Enrollment on December 15, but it was blocked in court in June 2026, and CMS kept the November 1 to January 15 window. Confirm the dates on HealthCare.gov.
What should I review before renewing my health plan?
Before renewing, review your 2027 premium after any premium tax credit, whether your doctors and prescriptions are still covered, and your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. Subsidies changed after the enhanced premium tax credits expired at the end of 2025: the 400% of federal poverty level limit is back, so some Michigan households may qualify for less help, or none.
- Your subsidy: update your estimated 2027 household income and household size on HealthCare.gov so the credit is calculated correctly.
- Your premium: compare next year’s net premium to this year’s, not just the plan name.
- Your network: confirm your doctors, specialists and hospitals are still in network.
- Your prescriptions: check each drug on the plan’s drug list for 2027.
- Your costs when you use care: deductible, copays and out-of-pocket maximum.
- Your household: a marriage, new baby, or a child leaving the plan changes the math.

What happens if I’m automatically re-enrolled?
If you do nothing during Open Enrollment, HealthCare.gov may automatically renew you into the same or a similar plan for 2027. That avoids a coverage gap, but the premium, network, drug list and your premium tax credit may all change. With enhanced credits gone, auto re-enrollment could leave some Michigan households paying noticeably more than expected without realizing it until January.
Auto re-enrollment is a safety net, not a review. Logging in, updating your income and comparing at least two or three alternatives takes far less time than fixing a surprise bill later. If your plan is being discontinued, comparing is even more important.
Can I get health insurance after open enrollment ends?
Yes, but only with a Special Enrollment Period. Qualifying life events include losing other health coverage, moving, getting married, and having or adopting a child. You typically have 60 days from the event to choose a Marketplace plan. Without a qualifying event, Michigan residents usually wait until the next Open Enrollment, so it’s worth acting before January 15.
If you’re between jobs, our individual and family health insurance page explains COBRA alternatives in Michigan. Short-term health insurance is limited to 185 days in any 365-day period with the same insurer in Michigan and is not a substitute for a Marketplace plan.
Is Medicare open enrollment different?
Yes. Medicare has its own Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 to December 7, 2026, with changes taking effect January 1, 2027. It applies to Medicare Advantage and Part D plans, not to HealthCare.gov Marketplace plans. If you or a family member is on Medicare or turning 65, Samantha Lewis Agency in Livonia can review those options separately.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to do anything if I’m happy with my current plan?
You should still log in and review it. Premiums, networks and drug lists can change from year to year, and your premium tax credit may be different now that the enhanced credits have expired. Updating your income and household details helps make sure the credit you receive for 2027 is accurate.
Can I change plans after January 15, 2027?
Only if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period through a life event such as losing other coverage, moving, marriage, or a birth or adoption. You typically have 60 days from that event. Otherwise, the next chance to change Marketplace plans is the following Open Enrollment period.
Is the Michigan open enrollment deadline different from other states?
Michigan uses HealthCare.gov, so it follows the federal Marketplace schedule: November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 for 2027 coverage. States that run their own Marketplace can set different dates, but those don’t apply to Michigan residents enrolling through HealthCare.gov.
Does open enrollment apply to my job’s health plan?
No. Employers run their own open enrollment periods on their own schedules, which your HR department will share. The dates on this page apply to individual and family plans bought through the HealthCare.gov Marketplace. If you’re comparing a job-based plan with Marketplace coverage, we can help you weigh the options.
How long does it take to enroll with your help?
It varies with your household, but having your income estimate, doctor names, prescription list and current plan details ready makes it quicker. We recommend booking early in November, well before the December 15 deadline for January 1 coverage, so there’s time to compare without rushing.
