Life insurance questions

How much life insurance do I need?

Add up what your family would need to cover: debts and your mortgage, years of lost income, future costs like college, and final expenses, then subtract savings and existing coverage. Our step-by-step guide walks through it.

What’s the difference between term and whole life insurance?

Term life covers you for a set period, such as 20 or 30 years, and is the most affordable way to get a large amount of coverage. Whole life lasts your entire life and builds cash value, but costs significantly more. Many families use term to protect income during working years.

Isn’t my life insurance through work enough?

Often not. Employer coverage is commonly one or two times your salary, which may not replace your income for long, and it usually ends if you leave the job. An individual policy stays with you.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not always. Some policies are fully underwritten with a short exam, which can lead to the best rates for healthy applicants. Others use health questions and records instead of an exam. We’ll show you both options.

When should I update my beneficiaries?

After any major life event: marriage, divorce, a new child or grandchild, or the death of a beneficiary. If you have minor children, talk with an attorney about a trust or guardian, since minors can’t receive proceeds directly.
